A zine is a self-published print work, comic or book, produced in very small numbers. There are loads and loads of ways to make them. They can be a gift for someone you really like, an item of fan art, they can be made for you as a keepsake or you can sell them to your legion of avid readers. It’s totally up to you. Your task is to make your very own eight-page zine and start your small-scale publishing career with punk and panache!
– A4 sheet of paper
– Scissors
– Pens
– Stickers (optional)
– Collage papers (optional)
– Stick of glue (optional)
Take a piece of A4 paper and fold it in half widthways. Then crease it in half both ways.
Cut along the folded edge but stop halfway along. Open your sheet and fold it in half, then push both ends to create an X shape. Close to make your zine. You have eight pages to do what you like with including a cover and a back cover. You could create your zine page by page, or you can open your sheet back out, fill in all the pages and fold it back into shape for a different result.
Think of a topic for your zine. I’m going to make one about Roxy, my little black dog, who is the best dog ever.
I like to start with a layer of collage papers and images. Try to work fast, it helps not to get too invested in perfection!
It’s totally up to you what you make your zine about and what you use to make it.
Take a marker pen, close your eyes and draw shapes and patterns on each page. Drawing with your eyes closed is fun and unpredictable and will make your pages feel full of energy.
Now you can get a bit more intentional about what goes on each page. Think about whether you’re telling a story, drawing a comic or just recording your thoughts, then go for it! Try to keep up a pace so that your pages are full of energy and bursting with colour and fun!

Did you know that the first appearance of Superman was actually in a 1933 zine created by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegle? Back then, Superman was a bald-headed villain (kind of like Lex Luthor), about as far from a slick-haired, leotard-wearing hero as you can get!
