Whales and dolphins use echolocation to see. Humans don’t have the same anatomy (obvs), but we can learn more about how it works by playing this super fun sound-sense game! You’ll need two or more players, so round up everyone you can and dive right in!
Find a large open space. Remove all obstacles so there is nothing you could trip over.
Choose one player to be the dolphin. This person will need to wear a blindfold or keep their eyes tightly shut. No peeking!
Choose one player to be a fish.
The aim of the game is for the dolphin to catch the fish using echolocation. To determine where the fish is, the dolphin shouts ‘fish!’ to which the fish must immediately reply ‘fish!’
The rest of the players either stand in a circle around the dolphin and fish to keep them safely contained, or act as rocks that the dolphin and fish must move between. If the dolphin moves towards a rock and says ‘fish!’, the rock will reply ‘rock!’, so the dolphin knows not to come too close.
Players take turns to be the fish or the dolphin.
Dolphins often work together to catch their prey. Try blindfolding two or more people to act as dolphins. Is it easier or harder for them to catch the fish when they work together?
Sometimes dolphins herd fish into a small space to make them easier to catch. Ask the other players to form a tighter circle around the dolphin and the fish. Is it easier or harder for the dolphin to catch the fish in a small space?
Noise pollution from human activities can make it much more difficult for dolphins to catch their prey. Ask the other players to make noise by clapping their hands and stamping their feet. Does this make it harder or easier for the dolphin to catch the fish?
