Top 5 Creatures of the Deep

The deep sea is a dark and difficult place to live, but the creatures that call this zone home have evolved unique methods of survival. The extreme environment has produced some truly bizarre and fascinating animals, from hairy crabs to spiny vampire squid.

1. Blood Belly Comb Jelly (Lampocteis cruentiventer)

  • Depth: 300–1,000m

  • Cool Fact: Glows with rainbow flashes using bioluminescence. Its deep red colour hides glowing prey in its belly from predators. Stylish and strategic!

2. Barreleye Fish (Macropinna microstoma)

  • Depth: 400–2,500m

  • Cool Fact: Transparent head with rotating tubular eyes that look up through its dome. Those ‘eyes’ on the front? Just nostrils. Wild.

3. Vampire Squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis)

  • Depth: 600–900m

  • Cool Fact: Not a vampire or a squid. Lives in super-low-oxygen zones and shoots glowing mucus to escape predators. Also dines on ‘marine snow’ (rotting ocean debris).

4. Yeti Crab (Kiwa puravida)

  • Depth: ~2,000m

  • Cool Fact: Sports hairy claws that host bacteria. These microbes detoxify its hot, toxic habitat and serve as snacks. Claws = lunchboxes.

5. Dumbo Octopus (Grimpoteuthis)

  • Depth: Down to 7,000m

  • Cool Fact: Named for its ear-like flippers, it glides through the pitch-black depths. Poor eyesight, but great at feeling its way with suckers and sensory hairs.
